手ノ子スキー場, Tenoko Ski Area ski resort
Tenoko Ski Area is a micro-resort in Yamagata Prefecture that suits only the most niche visitors - primarily local families and beginners seeking a low-key, accessible introduction to skiing in Japan. With just 0.4 km of piste, 92 m of vertical, and two lifts serving a base elevation of only 276 m, this is not a destination resort by any stretch. It is a neighbourhood hill, pure and simple.
The standout strength is accessibility and affordability for locals, plus the novelty of skiing in Japan's snowy northwest. However, the caveats are severe: snow reliability is variable at this low elevation, the terrain is genuinely tiny (you will lap it in minutes), there is virtually no off-piste opportunity, and the day pass price of JPY 6000 is extraordinarily expensive relative to the mountain's size and facilities. This appears to be a pricing anomaly or data error - it is roughly 10-15 times the cost of a day pass at major Japanese resorts.
We would only recommend Tenoko if you are a local seeking a quick family outing or a completist chasing every Japanese ski area. For any visitor planning a trip, look elsewhere in Yamagata or neighbouring Niigata, where you will find vastly more terrain, better snow, and more reasonable pricing.
