Snowpack

The total layered accumulation of snow on the ground at any given moment, made up of successive storms and weather events.

Understanding snowpack structure is central to avalanche forecasting. Stable layers bond to those above and below them; weak layers such as surface hoar or depth hoar create sliding surfaces that can propagate a slab.
