Kartepe ski resort
Kartepe is a modest Turkish resort suited to beginners and families seeking a convenient weekend escape from Istanbul and the Kocaeli region, rather than serious skiers chasing vertical or snow depth. With just 9.4 km of piste, 343 m of vertical, and a run mix heavily weighted toward easy terrain (7 of 14 runs), it's a place to learn fundamentals and enjoy a social day on snow without the crowds or expense of Alpine resorts. The four lifts move people efficiently for the terrain size, and the December-to-March season aligns with regional school holidays.
The honest caveats are substantial. Snow reliability at 21/100 is poor - you're gambling on natural snowfall in a region where it's inconsistent, and early and late season visits carry real risk of thin cover or closure. The TRY 800 adult day pass is eye-wateringly expensive for what you get; that's premium Alpine pricing for a beginner hill. Off-piste is essentially non-existent (1/5 rating), so this is pure groomed-run skiing. The modest elevation (base 1249 m, top 1592 m) and lack of advanced terrain mean intermediate and advanced skiers will lap the two black runs quickly and feel underwhelmed.
We'd recommend Kartepe only if you're based nearby, traveling with young children, or want a convenient Turkish ski experience without flying to Europe - and only if you're prepared for potential snow shortages and the steep day-pass cost. For serious skiing, the Alps or Caucasus are better bets.
