Leukerbad (Torrent) ski resort

Leukerbad is a compact, intermediate-friendly resort in the Wallis region that suits skiers and riders who want accessible terrain in a genuine Alpine setting without the crowds or expense of Switzerland's mega-resorts. The 24.4 km of piste is modest but well-distributed across 42 runs, with a healthy 25 intermediate runs forming the backbone - perfect for confident mid-level skiers looking to progress. The 1209 m vertical drop and elevation range (1387 m to 2596 m) deliver respectable Alpine skiing, and the November-to-April season is solid for the region.

The honest caveats: snow reliability sits at a middling 47/100, which means you'll want to time visits carefully or accept variable conditions, particularly early and late season. The resort is small - 7 lifts and just 42 runs total - so it lacks the variety and terrain volume of larger Swiss neighbours. Off-piste is noted as 'notable' (2/5) rather than exceptional, so this isn't a destination for serious backcountry skiers. At CHF 78 for an adult day pass, it's reasonably priced for Switzerland, but the limited terrain means you'll cover it quickly.

We'd recommend Leukerbad for intermediate skiers wanting authentic Swiss Alps experience in a quieter, more intimate setting, or as a secondary resort in a multi-resort Wallis tour. It's less suited to beginners seeking extensive green terrain, advanced skiers chasing challenging blacks, or those prioritising guaranteed snow.
