Ricken ski resort
Ricken is a micro-resort suited only to absolute beginners, young children, or locals seeking a quick fix on the slopes within the St. Gallen region. With just 0.8 km of piste, three easy runs, and a 54 m vertical drop, this is not a destination resort - it is a training hill. The two lifts and modest elevation gain make it ideal for first-timers taking their initial turns or parents introducing toddlers to skiing, but anyone with intermediate ability will exhaust the terrain in under an hour.
The honest caveat is snow reliability: at 17/100, Ricken sits low in the Alps and depends heavily on artificial snowmaking to maintain skiable conditions through its November-to-April season. Expect variable coverage, especially in warmer winters. The CHF 78 day pass is not cheap for what you get - you are paying for proximity and convenience, not terrain or quality. Off-piste is negligible (1/5 rating), so this is strictly a groomed-run operation.
We recommend Ricken only if you live nearby or are passing through the region with very young children. For any serious ski holiday, look elsewhere in the Alps.
