Chäserrugg-Alt St. Johann ski resort

Chäserrugg-Alt St. Johann is a modest, family-friendly resort in the Appenzell Alps that suits intermediate skiers and groups wanting accessible terrain without the crowds or expense of Switzerland's mega-resorts. The 33.2 km of piste spread across 44 runs (heavily weighted toward easy and intermediate) makes it ideal for building confidence and enjoying cruising runs, while the 1368 m vertical drop delivers respectable daily mileage. At CHF 78 for an adult day pass, it sits at the reasonable end of Swiss pricing.

The honest caveat is snow reliability - at a moderate 1/5 rating with a base of just 891 m, this is a resort that depends on natural snowfall and can suffer in lean winters. The lack of challenging terrain (only 2 advanced runs) means strong skiers will find it limiting, and the minimal off-piste rating (1/5) rules it out for anyone seeking backcountry adventure. The 16 lifts are adequate for the terrain size, but don't expect the infrastructure of larger resorts.

We'd recommend Chäserrugg-Alt St. Johann for families with mixed abilities, intermediate skiers wanting a relaxed Swiss experience, or groups prioritizing accessible runs and reasonable costs over guaranteed snow or extreme terrain. Visit during peak season (December-February) to maximize snow odds, and pair it with nearby resorts if you want variety in a single trip.
