Les Houches - Saint-Gervais ski resort

Les Houches - Saint-Gervais is a family-friendly, beginner-to-intermediate resort in the Chamonix Valley that suits skiers wanting accessible terrain without the crowds or price tag of Chamonix proper. With 39 easy runs and 25 intermediate options across 36.5 km of pistes, it's ideal for families, learners, and those building confidence on skis. The resort's modest vertical drop of 891 m and base elevation of 996 m mean it's manageable for a day trip or short break, and the EUR 60 day pass is genuinely good value for the Alps.

The honest caveat: snow reliability here is moderate at best (25/100), so you're gambling on natural snowfall or relying heavily on grooming. The off-piste rating of 1/5 tells you this isn't a backcountry playground - it's a resort for on-piste skiers. With only 7 advanced runs, strong intermediates and experts will find the terrain limited. The 15 lifts are adequate for the piste volume, but expect queues during peak weeks in December and February.

We'd pick Les Houches for a low-key family week or as a stepping-stone resort if you're new to the Alps. It's honest, unpretentious, and delivers solid value. Just don't expect deep powder or challenging off-piste, and check the snow forecast before booking.
