苗場スキー場, Naeba Ski Resort, Naeba sukī-ba ski resort

Naeba is a sprawling, family-friendly resort in Japan's snow-blessed Niigata Prefecture that punches well above its modest piste length. The 899 m vertical drop and 16 lifts serve a well-balanced run menu - 9 easy, 10 intermediate, 4 advanced - making it ideal for mixed-ability groups and those learning to ski in Japan. The long season from December through May is a genuine asset, and the mountain's gentle gradient suits families and intermediates who want to build confidence without steep exposure.

The honest caveat: snow reliability is variable (15/100), which is a significant concern for a resort at this elevation. While Niigata's maritime snow climate can deliver, you're gambling on conditions - powder days are possible but not guaranteed. Off-piste is rated only 2/5, so this isn't a backcountry playground. The piste network, while well-distributed across ability levels, is compact at 15.2 km, meaning repeat visitors will lap runs quickly. The day pass price (JPY 6000) is steep by global standards, though typical for premium Japanese resorts.

We'd recommend Naeba for families and intermediate skiers visiting Japan who value a long season and accessible terrain over challenging skiing or deep snow hunting. Go in January or February for the best snow odds, and pair it with nearby resorts or non-ski activities to justify the trip.
