川場スキー場, Kawaba Ski Resort, Kawaba sukī-ba ski resort

Kawaba is a compact, family-friendly resort in Gunma Prefecture that suits Japanese skiers seeking accessible terrain and those wanting a low-key, local experience without the crowds of Japan's famous mega-resorts. With 9 km of piste spread across 11 runs and a modest 551 m vertical, it's built for progression rather than ambition - ideal for beginners and intermediates, or families wanting a relaxed day on the snow. The resort's strength lies in its approachability: short lift queues, gentle gradient runs, and a genuine neighbourhood feel that rewards those willing to skip the hype.

The honest caveat is that Kawaba is not a destination resort. Snow reliability sits at a moderate 24/100, meaning you'll need to time visits carefully during the December-to-May season, and the off-piste rating of 2/5 suggests limited backcountry appeal for adventurous skiers. The vertical drop of 551 m is modest by any standard, so advanced skiers will find the terrain repetitive. This is a local hill that works brilliantly for what it is - a convenient, unpretentious place to ski - but it won't satisfy those chasing deep powder or challenging descents.
