Oudai (大仙市大台スキー場) ski resort

Oudai is a tiny, local hill in rural Akita Prefecture that suits only the most adventurous budget travellers or those with deep roots in the region. With just 4.5 km of piste, two lifts, and a vertical drop of 286 m, this is a hill for a quick morning session or a novelty visit, not a multi-day ski trip. The run variety - two easy, one intermediate, two advanced - suggests a mountain designed for locals rather than tourists, and the 1/5 off-piste rating means you'll be confined to groomed terrain.

The real problem is snow reliability: a 10/100 rating in a region that should see decent winter precipitation is alarming. Akita does receive snow, but Oudai's low base elevation (180 m) and variable conditions mean you could easily arrive to find marginal coverage or closure. The season runs December to May in theory, but don't assume consistent skiing. At JPY 6,000 per adult day pass - an eye-watering figure for a hill this size - Oudai represents poor value unless you're a local with season pass access or visiting purely for the experience of skiing Japan's smallest mountains.

Skip this unless you're a completist or stranded in rural Akita with a free afternoon. Better snow and terrain await at Akita's larger resorts or anywhere in Hokkaido or Nagano.
