Intermediate skiing is the sweet spot. You're past the beginner slopes but not yet committed to off-piste and black runs as a daily diet. The resorts that suit intermediates best share a few qualities: a large network of varied blues and reds so you never repeat the same run twice, enough altitude to keep the snow consistent across the season, and enough challenge at the top of the difficulty scale to give you something to aim for.
What we look for in a great intermediate resort: at least 40 intermediate-graded runs, a total ski area above 100km of marked piste, reliable snow (altitude or snowmaking), and ideally a long season so your week away isn't squeezed into a narrow February window. We've weighted our picks toward variety - a resort with 200 blues might be less interesting than one with 80 blues and 60 reds, because the mix keeps improving skiers progressing.
What makes a great intermediate resort?
The best intermediate resorts have a run distribution that matches the way intermediate skiers actually ski: mostly reds with a few blues for recovery and the odd black for ambition. They also tend to have high-capacity lifts (gondolas and six-pack chairs over drag lifts) that get you back to the top quickly, and grooming that keeps the reds in good condition even late in the afternoon.
